About the founders of Jaipur Rugs
Started by Nand Kishore Chaudhary in 1978, this organization has not only grown as a company but a very huge family. This social entrepreneurship project has impacted the lives of thousands of people belonging to the weavers’ community which were treated as untouchables.
Jaipur Rugs has played a vital role in providing not only a basic source of income for the locals especially the women but also making them self-reliant, independent, self-aware and more educated. The journey which began with only 3 handlooms, 9 artisans and one scooter has now developed into a family of more than 40000 artisans and weavers.
What Mr Chaudhary has to say about Jaipur Rugs Artisans
According to Chaudhary, they don’t sell carpets but their family’s blessings with every product they make. Each rug imbibing the hard work, creativity, love, and struggle of the weaver in it which can be clearly reflected through the artwork and design. Jaipur Rugs was first featured in media through an article named “Carpets: More than a revival" by Ilay Cooper. With his focused insurgent mission of uplifting his backward community, Nand Kishore Chaudhary revolutionized the complete handwoven carpet and rug industry which his ideas, drive and work.
Fighting against his own community and family, Chaudhary overcame all the challenges and eventually succeeded in setting up in business. Chaudhary took upon himself as not only giving livelihood to the youth and the women of this community but also teach them how to make deals, practice trade, and business and strengthen their self-esteem as well as individuality.
Even though his business was growing like wildfire, and booming all the way, Chaudhary made sure to inculcate more skills into weavers that would make them independent and help them improve their lives. Along with professionalizing, he made sure to connect to every one of his weavers, trying to make sure and understand their woes and providing solutions that were not only helpful for the weavers but also for the company.
Visiting Village in this tour
We will take you on a journey through jeeps, tractors, bullock carts, motorbikes, camel carts and then trek to remote homes connected by mud roads and single-lane highways. You will get to visit village homes in valleys, amongst hills and on riversides; between the narrow alleys of crowded villages and farmlands that are empty for as far as the eye can see.
