About Viceregal Lodge & Botanical Gardens

The Viceregal Lodge was the official summer residence of the then Viceroy of India. It was built by Henry Irwin in 1888 under the reign of Viceroy Lord Dufferin. The architecture portrays the Jacobethan style prominent in England during that time. It houses old photos, paintings, and artifacts dating back to the period of British rule in India. After Independence, it was converted as the official summer residence of the President of India known as Rashtrapati Niwas. It was later granted to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study for academic purposes.
