Idukki is one of the 14 districts of Kerala, India, created on 26 January 1972 by splitting the district of Kottayam into two. At that time, the district headquarters was Kottayam. It was moved to Painavu in June 1976. Idukki lies in the Western Ghats of Kerala. It is the second-largest district in the area, though it has the lowest population density. Idukki has a vast forest reserve area, with more than half of the district covered by forests. It contains densely populated urban areas with more sparse population in the villages.
