One of the most sacredand ancient temples in Rishikesh, it was established by a hindu saint by the name of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya.
Bharat Mandir is an ancient Hindu temple which is located near the Triveni Ghat on the banks of River Ganga. It is considered as the oldest and the most sacred temple in Rishikesh believed to be built in 789 AD. The temple also finds its name in several Hindu scripts and texts such as the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita, the Vishnu Purana, and the Vaman Purana. The main deity inside the temple is carved out of a single black stone also called Saligram. A 250-year old sacred tree stands visibly in front of the temple which is a confluence of three different trees namely Banyan, Peepal, and Bael. The department of Archaeology has also established a museum in the temple complex which displays pottery, sculptures and decorated bricks found during an evacuation. It is believed that these artifacts belong to a period between 3rd and 14th century.
